Sheik Gumi: Lion of the Desert
Every nooks and crannies of Nigeria's Northern part was held to a stand-still. Everyone was in great fear to discuss the terror insurgence on the part of the country though; it was disheartening. Therefore, the weak turned to the high-ups to serve as their megaphone to the concerned authorities but their pleas fell on deaf ears. Expectantly, indiscriminate bombing and killing of innocent souls escalated that it was unbearable anymore.
Boko haram (either political or criminal) brought the populace to their knees and the central government was left shading the shadows of their unreasonable conditions for seizing fires. All these are coined around one of the two recognized religions in Nigeria; Islam. The sect claimed to wage jihad on their enemies and that of the religion. This posed a greatest challenge to the Muslim community since the religion was on the line.
There appeared a fearless cleric, hater of injustice, promoter of religious equality, lion of the desert, Sheik Ahmad Abubakar Gumi. Nigerian Muslims had to wait till the last Ramadan tafseer session before their religion was vindicated of terrorism. Gumi put his life and popularity among the Northern Muslims on line to wage verbal war on the sect. He declared them "The greatest enemies of Islam"!! He was very tacit and concise in his claims that Islam actually stands for "religious tolerance" against the claim of the sect.
This came as a relief for every adherents of the religion since scholars especially in the North decided to keep mute in order to save their lives. They subjected the insurgence to tribal dimension thereby, saving their so called sons from the wrath of the government. The emirs are not exempted from this blame as they were busy mending their battered relationships with the government and left their people to face the menace unattended to.
The most amazing part of the scenario was that of the Northern politicians. Northern representatives and senators were worst of it all!! I can still remember the first house session after Senator Gang (can't remember his actual name) was killed in Jos, a member wanted to put the issue forward for deliberation but was quickly stopped by the concerted animalistic shout of the Northern reps. The only reason given was that the discussion was going to add up to already existing political problems.
Gumi needs to be encouraged and supported for him to be emulated by other scholars in the North. It is generally believed that if more scholars could come out and dissociate Islam from Boko haram's terrorism, two of the three forms of the sect would soon be wiped off as claimed by General Muhammadu Buhari. Sermons from respected scholars could weaken both religious and criminal boko haram while the government would just use military power to quench political boko haram's power.
May the good Lord continue to strengthen this courageous lion of the dessert and protect him from every satanic plans of the aggrieved terrorists and enemies of Islam. Sheik Ahmad Abubakr Gumi is indeed a chip off the old block. The new lion of the dessert has just emerged!!!!
