SAM BACILE: HIS STUPENDOUS DEPICTION OF THE PROPHET



Sam Bacile posed another challenge against the resolve of every Muslim in the globe by his stupendous depiction of the Prophet as a humanizer and gay. As a Muslim, I was furious when I heard the news and wanted to register my plight on my facebook wall. But my instinct just beckoned on me to watch the film on youtube before anything so I did.

I was disappointed in Sam’s intellectual faculty after watching the whole film. It was a share blasphemy and hatred towards the person of the greatest prophet of Allah. The film lacks direction and objectivity right from the outset to the end. It is in my personal opinion that the rise of Islam in the West is not unconnected with their attack on the prophet’s person.

Muslims should not be amazed with this as Islam has always been a subject of attack and ridicule from the renaissance Europe.  They have employed their media power to mislead people on the true picture of Islam just because Islam is seen as a major enemy to their ideology. Some orientalists go to the extent of calling the prophet mad and suffering from epilepsy.

However, there are some of them that look into Islamic ideology with every sense of objectivity. Douglas Pratt of University of Waikato is one of them. He accused the West of what he called “Misinterpretation and distortion of Image of Islam” in his paper titled: “Islam and the contemporary world: Western image and Muslim ideology (2005)”.

Thomas Carlyle delivered a public lecture on Muhammad and Islam in Edinburgh on Friday, 8 May 1840. He displaced most of the distorted notions of the West towards Islam and challenged them to be objective about the religion. Among his submissions, he said:

“Our current hypothesis about Mohamet, that he was scheming Imposter, a Falsehood incarnate, that his religion is a mere mass of quackery and fatuity, begins really to be now untenable to anyone. The lies, which well-meaning zeal has heaped round this man, are disgraceful to ourselves only”. (Watt, M. W. 1990, What is Islam? Pg 2).

EXTREME REACTIONS ARE NOT ISLAMIC:

 The reported killing of US ambassador to Libya, Christopher Stephens and series of attacks on American citizens and high commissioners are rather unfortunate and uncalled for. Islam has systematic ways of attending to issues like this especially in this contemporary global world. We should not be so pushed to the extent of killing innocents for a crime of a few.

Instead of this, we should engage them in intellectual fight since our religion is very rich in all ramifications. Killing and rioting will not only do Islam bad but also affirm the stand of the West that it was a religion of tugs and irrational faithful. Islam does not sanction such irrational response whatsoever as such blasphemy happened during the lifetime of the prophet and he intelligently dealt with it.

HOW SHOULD MUSLIMS REACT?

It is note-worthy here to remind Muslims that this is not going to be the last attempt by the West to attack the person of our prophet or distort Islam’s image. As a result, we must device some means of fighting back in an intellectual manner.

This is because the unrestricted freedom given to the Westerners will always give them the right to say and share anything on internet. Therefore, the following are some of the ways to protect and fight for our religion:

1- Let every reader of this post write short but concise virtues of the prophet he/she knows on his facebook or tweeter wall.

2- Every Muslim should write at least, a comment on Sam Bacile video on youtube to exonerate the prophet from the blasphemy. If you don’t have an account on youtube, create one now. However, your comment must not be geared towards attacking any person.

3- Indulge any non-Muslim in discussion regarding the video. Let him/her know the true picture of Islam and the prophet’s personality.

4- Every schooled Muslim should find a book written on the prophet and read it in order to acquaint himself/herself with the doctrines of the greatest prophet.

5- It is strongly advisable that we all create a blog to have our voice heard at least in our environment.

6- Lastly, pray fervently for peace to reign in the world and that Allah show the enemies of religion way to appreciate the beauty of Islam.
